Is Your Fear Hurting Others?

“The people curse him who holds back grain, but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.” – Hebrew Proverb

When agents say, “I don’t want to be salesy,” they often think they’re talking about staying true to their values.

Most of the time, they’re talking about fear.

That fear often disguises itself as humility. But fear dressed up as humility is still fear. And more often than not, it’s rooted in something deeper: an exaggerated concern for self.

I was coaching an agent recently who has built a truly next-level client experience. Thoughtful. Generous. Deeply client-centered. It honors people beautifully.

And yet, they hesitated to reach out and connect because they didn’t want to be seen as “salesy”. I get it. I’ve felt that way before.

But here’s the tension.

Grain stored while people are hungry isn’t virtuous. It’s actually selfish.

If what you offer genuinely helps people survive and thrive, if it serves them at such a high level that they are better off for having you in their corner, then selling it is not selfish. It’s generous. It’s self-forgetful service.

What would happen if you raised your game and simply forgot about you?

If you’re willing to move past fear and self-concern, here’s a few honest questions to ask yourself:

  1. How can I elevate my service so it genuinely serves people better than it does today?
  2. What fear or self-concern is causing me to hold back on something that could truly help my clients?
  3. Who is one person I should get over my self-concern about and confidently reach out to today?

Friends, selling is not taking something from people when you have something truly beneficial for their good.

It’s taking responsibility for offering what will absolutely help them.

Here’s my challenge to you: Make your service such a gift that withholding it would be irresponsible.

Then get beyond yourself and go sell it.
It will serve them well, and it will deepen your love for the work.

In your corner,

Chris
